Video Feature: Extension

(Edmonton) For the University of Alberta, extension work was no afterthought; it was part of the university's raison d'ĂȘtre. Founding President Henry Marshall Tory insisted that his professors engage the community right from the start, and so they hit the road, travelling to remote parts of the province to deliver lectures.

Over the years Extension became the largest and most successful unit of its kind in Canada, responsible for founding such treasures as CKUA Radio and the Banff School of Fine Arts.

On March 15, Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel officially proclaimed April 4, 2012 as University Extension and Lifelong Learning Day in honour of the faculty's centenary. The attached video, shown at Extension's lifelong learning awards gala and birthday party, provides an overview of the faculty's history.
